Week 3 Story: The Prideful Prince
Prince Hayden was considered to be narcissistic and prideful by the entirety of the kingdom that his father rules over. He often found joy in flaunting his wealth, mocking the uneducated and considered himself far superior. He was often found arguing with many and using his title as a mean of winning, despite them being more knowledgeable on the subject. Most of the citizens felt as though Prince Hayden should be disciplined but they never once brought it up with the King for they adored him and did not want to inadvertently disrespect him.
But one day, a witch who resides near the citadel had enough and decided to teach the boy a lesson. She lured him with her beauty until they were alone, then set the spell into motion. Soon enough the prince’s vision began to cloud and his eyes began to close. He felt himself falling towards the ground before he blacked out.
When he finally opened his eyes, the prince thought he might have been drugged because his face was staring back at him. Before he could even exclaim his confusion, his face began speaking with his voice.
“Look you’re confused, I get it. Let me explain what is happening.” It began, “There was a witch who decided she was done with your terrible attitude. So she set up a plan to lure you into her home and cast a spell. That was me, if you didn’t catch that, I’m the witch.”
The witch held his hand out, as if waiting for Hayden to shake it but instead Hayden just stared at it in bewilderment.
“Okay, then. The point of this whole thing is that I am now currently the Prince of this kingdom and you are just a simple civilian.” continued the witch, “I hope you may learn a lesson or two from this.”
The witch walked out the front door and Hayden’s words finally came back to him.
“No one will believe you!” Hayden yelled towards the retreating figure.
It brought the attention of a few civilians who stared at the two of them with curiosity, and knights who began to position themselves protectively around the witch. The witch saw their expressions and smiled back at Hayden.
“I think they already have.” were the last words spoken by the witch before he mounted the Prince’s steed and headed toward the castle.
Hayden did not know what he was going to do. All he had ever known was his title and wealth, and now he had neither. One thing he knew for sure was that his wealth gave him power and he needed that power. He was going to regain that power one way or another.
In the end, the kingdom saw a change in the crowned Prince of Iristole. They saw him grow kinder and more humble as the days went by. Some of the citizens are curious as to what caused the change. Many of them think it was crime rate rising that caused the Prince to step up. While many are grateful for the change in the Prince’s attitude, it doesn’t relieve the fear they have towards the Kingdom’s newest and biggest criminal that goes by the alias ‘Pride’.
Author's Note: This story was based off of Gertrude Landa's The Beggar King, where the prideful King Hagag is turned into a beggar by a genie after disrespecting the Holy Bible. Hagag becomes the guide to some blind beggars and is redeemed. He is given the chance to return back to ruling as King after learning his lesson. I decided for my version the important thing was to change the ending. I switch the title of the main character and chose to give them a darker path, one of crime as opposed to that of redemption.

Hi Dora!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your story The Prideful Prince. I liked how you used a lot of dialogue between characters in your story. It made me want to keep reading and reading until I got to the end. I also think it was interesting how you changed the characters path to be one of crime which defiantly gave your story a different twist compared to the original.
Dora,
ReplyDeleteGreat story! I thought you did really well with setting the scene - establishing who Prince Hayden was and why there was a problem. This fluidly led into the bit about him encountering the witch! I was a little bit confused about the ending at first. I wasn't sure if the prince ended up learning a lesson and returning back to his original role, but I think your author's note explained that wasn't the case. Instead of the redemption of the original story, the ruler was actually caught in a position that led to crime.
