Week 11 Story: Kyle the Vegan

“Legend has it that as a child, he could and would eat his weight in chicken nuggets and bacon. But as a youth when a deal went south, his life took a whole new direction. A part of himself has been left behind and he has become a new man. This is the tale of how Kyle became a vegan.” said one of the boys who was sitting around the bonfire along with a few girls.
“Shut up, Eric.” retaliated Kyle.
“No, but really, what made you decide to go vegan?” asked Leslie.
“Are you done with the jokes or do you want me to tell it?” Kyle asked Eric.
Eric made a ‘go ahead’ gesture, and soon enough the story began.
“So it all started with a stupid bet. I bet Eric that I could eat more chicken nuggets than he could in 10 minutes. The loser had to go vegetarian for a month. As you might’ve guessed, I lost by like three chicken nuggets. So I had to change what I ate so I wouldn’t die of starvation. After the month was over, I felt that my body was different so I continued with the vegetarianism. Soon enough I thought and decided to try going to a whole way and just becoming vegan. I pretty much thought ‘Why not?’, it made sense at the time. And I have never felt so much better, my body was free of toxins, animals aren’t harmed for me to sur-”
“And that’s enough!” interrupted Chelsea, one of the other girls there. “Don’t start on your vegan rant, again.”
“If you really want to know about his vegan lifestyle, just check out his documentary that he has on his Instagram account,” commented Eric.

The groups of friends erupted in laughter and as the night went on more stories were told. And Kyle only brought up being vegan a few times after that, so he did a pretty good job.

Author's Note: In the original story, Why The Hummingbirds Drink Only Dew, the hummingbird and the heron share a lake. They bet that whoever flies faster to the other side of the lake wins and the loser can't drink from the lake anymore. After overestimating his ability, the hummingbird loses and is no longer allowed to drink from the lake. When I first read this story I was struck by the concept of veganism. I kept the same idea, like the bet, but I changed a few of the aspects to make it more realistic for the setting. I also changed the way that it was told so that it would fit in better.

  1. Hello, Dora! Great work on this story! I did not read the original story but when you described it in your Author's note it was clear that you tied a new setting to an old story perfectly. I loved the way you used dialogue as your main form of description and the setting change really helped set the tone for the story. Great work!

  2. Hi Dora,
This was quite amusing! You did a good job setting the story in modern times while keeping the original plot. I think you left out a word in the sentence "And Kyle only brought up being a few times." I like how in general your stories are simple but really let the reader get to know the characters.
