Reading Notes: Andersen Fairy Tales, Part A
I always wanted to read the original versions of the fairy tale we know today. Mostly because they've been modified to suit younger audiences and some of the tales were dark. So when I saw this unit on fairy tales, I wanted to do some reading.
The first story on this unit was The Princess and the Pea, which I would say I am somewhat familiar with this tale. I never understood as to why a real princess would be sensitive to something so small, it was never explained and I still have that question. If I was to retell this story, it would be in a more comedic light and in a modern setting. The prince would be just a young man with high standards for women but he ends falling in love with a woman that passes his stupidest standard. I'm not sure on the details but I feel like it could be a nice twist to this classic tale.
The second story on this unit was The Emperor's New Suit, which is said to hilarious in the overview. Towards the end, I felt some secondhand embarrassment for the emperor. It was definitely a fun and interesting tale. An idea for a story popped up when the small child spoke up and it made me think of that scene from the perspective of a child. I feel as though it could be a somewhat funny story.
Another story on this unit is The Wicked Prince, which I found to be incredibly interesting. I liked the concept of the prince being praised for his 'splendid buildings' but his people were unaware of the harm he caused to others. I found that to be interesting because it's what happens in war and with leadership, the winner gains many things but the loser is left with nothing and close to death. If I was to retell that story I would probably have a dark tale that kind of focuses on that concept. I will also keep in the prince's arrogance, strong enough that he would challenge an omniscient power.
